Crowne Plaza Sanya Renamed 12/30/2011
Starting from Dec 1, 2011 Crowne Plaza Sanya has been officially renamed as Huayu Resort & Spa Yalong Bay Sanya, now managed by the property owner itself, Sanya Huayu Tourism Development Co., Ltd., who took over the management right earlier on Aug 30 by terminating its management contract with InterContinental Hotels Group, the famed international hotel management brand. Statistics show that during its six-year management of the hotel, InterContinental Hotels Group has not for a single year achieved the contracted operating performance, generating business profits far less than those agreed upon by the two sides in the management contract, let alone further losing the hotel owner's trust by tampering with the annual report submitted to the owner in order to cover up its poor performance, though later found out by yet having caused irretrievable loss to the owner. The past decade witnessed the rapid development of the hotel industry in China, especially in Sanya, China's only tropical resort, with various hotels and resorts mushrooming. With China becoming increasingly prominent in the international community, more and more people are traveling to China to experience the Chinese culture, feel its fast development, or just have vacations, making China a key market for the hotel business, the boom of which reciprocally benefit the tourism industry. Meanwhile China's vast territory and abundant business opportunities prompted many world-famous international hotel management brands to throng into and compete in the Chinese hotel market. By now 66 world-renowned luxury hotel brands including InterContinental, Hilton, Marriott, Kempinski and Shangri-la have all entered the Chinese market. The rapid expansion of international brands resulted in that 80% of China's hotel business profits is generated by those 20% high-star hotels, among which again 80% are managed by foreign brands. Fairly speaking, the international hotel management groups played a pivotal role in the early stage at the rise of China's hotel industry. In the process of conquering the Chinese hotel market by virtue of their popularity and reputation, international brands also face serious shortage of management personnel. It's been a common phenomenon that the key management positions might be kept vacant for a long term in hotels manged by foreign brands. Lack of management staff means their incompetence to sign management contracts with more property owners. However, none of those international brands is willing to slow down their expansion in the Chinese market in order to ensure their service quality. So in spite of such a severe problem, they still signed the contract, but more or less failed to achieve their claimed operating performance. Why is that equipped with first class hardware facilities and managed by the same world-famed international brands, the hotels and resorts in China often receives far more complaints than those overseas? Isn't it thought provoking? Sanya Illusory Art Gallery 12/17/2011

Nov 18, Mr. Gu Jingqi, vice mayor of Sanya city, Hainan province, made a speech during the special promotion conference held in Sanya for the Hainan trip of more than 30 multinational companies, pointing out that Sanya is actively increasing efforts to adjust its industrial structure so as to speed up the economic development of those capital, talent, and technology-intensive industries, e.g. the financial industry. He was inviting the multinational corporations to invest in Sanya. Currently Sanya heavily relies on tourism and real estate, the two pillar industries, for economic growth, making it vulnerable to external influences and the macro-economic-control policies of China. Therefore the industrial structure of Sanya needs to be adjusted for sustainable development of Sanya city, which is evident in its policies issued this year that preferentially favor newly-emerging industries as well as the modern financial industry. Encouraging progresses have been witnessed in the construction of Sanya ZTE R&D Center, Yacheng Creative Industry Park, Ji Yang Animation Industry Base, and Haitang Bay HP Park. Being China's largest listed telecommunication equipment company, ZTE started the construction of Sanya ZTE R&D Center in August, which will be completed in two phases. Phase one will include ZTE Sanya Research Institute, ZTE College of Telecommunication, and ZTE International Exchange Center, while the second phase will include ZTE Multimedia R&D Center, ZTE High-end Software R&D Center, Enterprise-level Postdoctoral Workstation, and Technology Transfer and China Work Base for Overseas Scientists. When completed, the expected annual turnover from all these projects will total more than 6 billion yuan and over 8,000 R&D staff will be working and living in Sanya. Sanya has clearly stated in its recently-issued policies that those qualified enterprises will get government support and preference in aspects of land supply, land investment, business support, tax incentives, etc. In order to be qualified for enjoying the relevant preferential policies, an enterprise shall register right in Sanya in terms of both business and taxation either an international, national, or large regional headquarter, or a management center, R&D center, procurement center, logistics center, financial center, investment center, or marketing center, which also should be an independent legal entity and get taxed in Sanya. Mr. Zhu Jianyong representing Italy Dailapeita Yacht Manufacturing Co., Ltd. expressed the hope to set up a project R&D center for yacht business along with an after-sale services and maintenance base. Gu Jingqi said Sanya will optimize its industrial structure to improve the proportion of high value-added industries by continuing to beef up the development of tourism and real estate, meanwhile fostering the financial industry, headquarter business, yacht business, cruise industry, modern commerce and trade, IT, creative industry, and R&D centers. For the past few days multinational representatives visited Haikou, Yangpu, Boao, and Sanya among other places, witnessing the rapid development momentum of Hainan island with abundant business opportunities. Nudity by Academy Entrance 11/06/2011
A large portrait of a naked woman in 4-meter high is standing by the main entrance of Hubei Academy of Fine Arts for advertising an art exhibition. Passers-by responses varied. Some said it's indecent and derogatory to women. Some felt it's a perfect showcase for the female body, highlighting the curves and breast among other female physical characteristics, completely a sensual vision forced upon the audience. Professor Cao Dan, curator of the academy's art gallery, pointed out that the public response was as expected amid the development of Chinese culture. Arts needs to be spread out to reach the public. The painting is a masterpiece highly praised in the industry, which is vivid and subjectively true, therefore essentially different from pornographic photographs. By introducing it to the public, we aimed at raising the level of popular tastes of aesthetic appreciation. |
